Hello! This is my first post. I'm a freshman in high school in New York.
I'm the clarinetist in my school's chamber orchestra- we play for ballets. We're trying Copland's Rodeo next fall- the four dance episodes, that is. What does the clarinet part look like? Is it for B flat or A? We just finished our first production- Peter and the Wolf- how does Rodeo compare in difficulty? I had to work quite hard on Peter but I managed to pull it off. Is there a second clarinet part (i. e. Will I have to enlist the grumpy 2nd clarinetist from wind ensemble)?

The Buckaroo Holiday, Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe Down are all for Bb clarinet. Hoe Down is in the key of
E(4 sharps).(I can't remember the other dance off the top of my head.)
Yes, there is a second clarinet part and a part for bass clarinet as well.
It's different than Peter and the Wolf. I'd say Peter is more technically difficult...but I'm nort shortchanging the Copland.
I'd also say you're doing remarkably well for a freshman in high school.
Best wishes,
Al

I just finished playing the bass clarinet part for Rodeo. The movement you omitted was the Corral Nocturne, but that's probably because it's only for just a few instruments -- but I thought Bb clarinets played on it....
The bass part has some exciting parts in it, like a little solo in the Saturday night waltz and a really weird high solo out of nowhere in Hoedown. I enjoyed myself honking on the low notes.
Alas, I have no insight into the soprano parts because I was off in my own little world during Rodeo, but do have fun! Just remember: Beef. It's what's for dinner.
Enjoy yourself!

I know this is old, but I'm playing bass clarinet for Rodeo soon, and I can't for the life of me find that bass clarinet solo in Hoedown. Where is it?

When I play the "Hoedown" from Rodeo, although it is written for Bb, I play it on my A which allows you to play it in the key of F rather than the written E (clarinet pitch). Just easier that way........hope this helps a bit.

Curin, there is no bass clarinet solo in Hoedown, there's a small octave leap doubling the bassoon. Otherwise it's a very boing part. The solo is in Saturday Night Waltz.
Mic, One of the mov't, I think it Chorral Nocturne, has a very nice clarinet part and duet. I agree that both parts in Hoedown are very difficult if played in tempo, a real finger and tongue twister. Many players do transpose it up a half step and play it on the A clarinet, you should consider doing that even if you need to write it out. That goes for both of you. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
