Hi folk, your indulgence please for this little survey (Mark, I hope this is ok?).
Nothing evil here, I'm just trying to get a broad picture of some quirks of my clarinet playing colleagues around the world and map some demographics.

1. Yes (If a study is the same thing as an etude?) - except on nights when I have band practise, then I just do scales

3. No. In fact, I am more inclined naturally to avoid a 'popular' brand (sort of an anti-mob mentality) eg have yet to try Vandoren reeds

1. No. I don't even play every day.
2. No. I play the clarinet my folks got for me in '83 and a mouthpiece I got around '84 or '85. I have other mouthpieces which I did obsess over for about 2-3 years, but I'm stickin' with what I've got now...
3. No. But see #2. If it ain't broke, I ain't got the time or dough to fix it...
4. Yes. I am very fluent in many keys/scales/etc. even though I don't play them every day. The amount of time I obsessed over them in Conservatory, etc. has sufficed in my current profession.
5a & 5b. My difficulties right now are in memorizing complex tunes, not in playing them, so I don't have a good answer except to say that I do play the hard stuff slowly while I'm learning it.
6. profession. I teach and play in a Balkan folk music band, in addition to working part-time for health insurance.
7. Not typically.

DON'T KNOW...k, does it count if yes, I spend practice time obsessing over my setup if it feels off, but I just end up staying up really late practicing to make up for it?

NO...I love trying new equipment/reeds, though I do tend to end up returning to the ol' favorites

6. Hard to answer. Closest answer is b, but I'm a clarinet student so don't work as a clarinetist (although I sometimes play for money) but I also do it for pleasure.

I'm just starting back, having to relearn the clarinet after having gone 45 years (since HS band) without playing it. So, I might not be very representative of the larger cohort found on this BB.
Anyhoo, here goes:

About half of my practice time is etudes. I don't play scales much.

No. I take good care of my clarinet, but I don't blame it for my inadequacies.

I am not equipment driven. I buy quality stuff and play it to my limited ability. I don't try alternatives, not through brand loyalty, but because I don't amass equipment. In the case of reeds, I use Rico and Gonzalez regularly and Vandoren occasionally; I can't be bothered to try other brands.
Question 4) - do you consider fluency at scales and arpeggios has a discernable affect on your overall technique?
Main use of fluency in scales is make it easy to sight-read passages in horrid keys.
Question 5b) - if you encounter a difficult passage in a piece, do you jump in the deep end (for the thrill of seeing you don't crash) and then work through your mistakes
Jump in and make loads of mistakes.
Question 6) - is your clarinet playing:
a) for pleasure only (my pleasure, that is, whether it pleases anyone else is another matter)

Only if I have a gig shortly afterwards; I play only a handful of gigs a year.

England. Is that in Europe?
To answer Mike_Clarinet's question, I play in a community band. I am also starting to dip a cautious toe into the murky waters of the brass band world, but that's on the trombone.

Not really. I think I got over that phase.

yes, it's part of the foundation of all playing.

Well....I do a sightreading of the hard passage at a medium tempo. Then, I work out a few spots very slowly until I can get it at a medium slow speed and then I do the metranome very slowly and pick up speed.

Well, I'm hoping to make clarinet playing my profession. I'll be an incoming freshman for college next year. But, I do take a great deal of pleasure in playing as well.

I haven't so far, but I've been very tempted to. I think I might end up taking my intermediate horn on vacation with me some day. And also, if you don't count the OU Symposium/Clarinetfest/All-State conventions as vacations.

- I don't why I would answer to ONE question exactly, since I use to do the both things, and I consider then to be of equal importance. I first play the tune ``quicly and badly'' and then slow it down to get it good.

No generally, but when taking lessons and concentrating on technique about 4 times per week, on non-band practice days

No, have made a few adjustments in past couple of years and I'm still happy with them; when it ain't broke, don't fix it.

No, but am still playing a clarinet that I was handed 17 years ago; lovely tone, very reliable, got lucky with it - see answer to question 2.
Question 4) - do you consider fluency at scales and arpeggios has a discernable affect on your overall technique?
Absolutely, but arpeggios are my downfall. My piano training gets me through scales with relative ease.

Q1: Yes. mostly scales. Not so many etudes, mostly concerto repertoire.
Q2: No. Sometimes on a bad day.
Q3: No, but where I live I cant try new products very often, in fact never.
Q4: Yes, very important.
Q5a: No not enough.
Q5b: Yes too much.
Q6: C, very important but I still play as much for enjoyment.
Q7: Yes, or a sax.
Q8: e - In Ireland. (Is it just me or am I the only person here from Ireland).
To answer Mike_Clarinet's question I play with the National Youth Orchestra, Irish Youth Wind Ensemble, my local City's Youth Orchestra and Youth Jazz Orchestra, a professional big band and various smaller jazz groups.
Isn't music a wonderful life!

diz - it is reassuring to know a marketing Professional is in charge of this great and unbiased survey. Will you be able to tell if professional players are more likely to know if scales and arpeggios are helpful than people who play just for fun? Does playing scales lead to better vacations? Does having a satisfying set up make people play difficult passages slowly and carefully? Are people whose region includes the letter "a" more likely to tell you more than you wanted to know in a survey?

It's always interesting to hear people like johng and EuGeneSee's opinions on things that happen here ... ever critical and never willing to try something new or initiate thought or discussion.
Instead of flaming my efforts - why not put your minds to beginning a thought provoking thread? By the way, did my subject heading say "the survey of the century?" (no) did it say, "the analytical study of the year" (no).

Diz, really when I indicated in that pun that I was anxious to see how the poll results stack up one would normally surmise that I am very supportive of what you are doing here . . . since I have been away from the clarinet scene for almost half a century, it would probably be best for me to keep a low profile and learn from all the expertise represented here. I have occasionally asked a question (such as how to clean a wooden bore with a bottle brush - and got good advice both here and via e-mail), and once even as a new thread (see Bassoon forum).
Criticize? I don't know enough about music in general and clarinets in particular to criticize what anyone says on here. I'm here, and ask questions, to learn from those of you who know.

I try everything under the sun. Just got me three old Bundy mouthpieces. They sit next to the Chedevilles. I'm excited.

I improvise in different scales. Also, playing etudes in different keys "awakens" your fingers to that key. Same for piano.
Question 5a) - if you encounter a difficult passage in a piece, do you start slowly and build the speed up incrementally (avoiding learned mistakes)?
YES

YES-From the beginning it was drummed into me that scales were of the utmost importance, that so much of learning a piece quickly and being a passable sightreader was learning to recognize, very quickly, scale passages, broken scales, and scales in 3rds.
I try to spend at least 15/20 mins. a day on etudes as well. I'm one of those people who doesn't feel ready to play until I've warmed up for a while, plus I like etudes.
I was really kind of surprised when I looked over the survey results and saw so many people did not play scales everyday.

NO-I never got into the habit. I studied with guys who were great players, but were not gadget freaks. They just teed it up and played.
