Question 1) - do you play scales and etudes daily?
Depends on day, how much time I have, and how my chops are holding up
Question 2) - do you obsess about your setup to the detriment of your practise time?
Not really. I think I got over that phase.
Question 3) - are you brand driven to the point of never trying an alternative, no matter how attractive?
No.
Question 4) - do you consider fluency at scales and arpeggios has a discernable affect on your overall technique?
yes, it's part of the foundation of all playing.
Question 5a) - if you encounter a difficult passage in a piece, do you start slowly and build the speed up incrementally (avoiding learned mistakes)?
Question 5b) - if you encounter a difficult passage in a piece, do you jump in the deep end (for the thrill of seeing you don't crash) and then work through your mistakes
Well....I do a sightreading of the hard passage at a medium tempo. Then, I work out a few spots very slowly until I can get it at a medium slow speed and then I do the metranome very slowly and pick up speed.
Question 6) - is your clarinet playing:
a) for pleasure only
b) a semi-hobby/profession
c) a profession
Well, I'm hoping to make clarinet playing my profession. I'll be an incoming freshman for college next year. But, I do take a great deal of pleasure in playing as well.
Question 7) - do you take your clarinet on vacation with you?
I haven't so far, but I've been very tempted to. I think I might end up taking my intermediate horn on vacation with me some day. And also, if you don't count the OU Symposium/Clarinetfest/All-State conventions as vacations.
