Was looking for a quote and got distracted by this wonderful one from one the world's best clarinetits ...
Jack Brymer said:
"The ability to play the clarinet is the ability to overcome the imperfections of the instrument. There's no such thing as a perfect clarinet, never was and never will be."
So, all you R13 sheep, take note. Here's a challenge ... find me another (quote) relating to clarinets.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

"There are two instruments worse than a clarinet - two clarinets."
~ Ambrose Bierce
Obviously refering to R-13's

"The clarinet is one of the most technically perfect of wind instruments"
- John Corigliano
While Mr. Brymer may be right that no individual clarinet is perfect, on the whole, we're still doing pretty good overall!

Even the great scholar Curt Sachs had a sense of humor, although in this case it may have been unintentional -
"The origin of the clarinet is unknown. It has been found in primitive civilizations, but only in recent layers, and the question of whether it migrated from a lower to a higher civilization, or from a higher to a lower one, is not yet decided."
The History of Musical Instruments (1940)

Perhaps Sr. Corigliano had been tapping the Valpolicella a bit heavily prior to making that statement.
Regards,
John

I heard this quote years ago from the famous tenor sax player, Frank Wess
"The clarinet was invented by five different cats! They lived in five different cities and they didn't know each other...and they didn't care!"
Frank was playing clarinet on a date with us, and said, "I'm feelin' very clarinoid!"

"The clarinet, though appropriate to the expression of the most poetic ideas and sentiments, is really an epic instrument - the voice of heroic love".
Hector Berlioz: Grand trait‚ d'instrumentation et d'orchestration modernes 1843
The many-keyed clarinet, can sound so ghostly in the deep chalumeau register but higher up can glean in silvery blossoming harmony.
Thomas Mann, Doctor Faustus
The clarinet is suited to the expression of sorrow, and even when it plays a merry air there is a suggestion of sadness about it. If I were to dance in prison, I should wish to do so to the accompaniment of a clarinet.
André Grétry: Memoirs.

Unable to go beyond the above goodies, my addition is my own [AFAIK], " I'd rather play the malady on a clarinet than a harmonica". Looking in our newer Bartlett's there is about a page re: music, a goodly # under instrument, the closest being "The nightingale has a lyre of gold, The lark is a CLARION call, And the blackbird plays but a boxwood flute, But I love him best of all. Henley, Echoes [pg741-2] Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

vin - I've heard that Ringo one, too. I'm amazed he could actually join two words together considering the chemically enhanced life he (anecdotally) lead.
