What is HS Selmer mouthpiece? Not HS* or HS**
Author: JimV

Anyone ever hear of a Selmer HS mouthpiece? Not a HS* or HS** just HS! I have looked at all my charts and can not find a plain HS. If so, what is the tip opening? I am told the mouthpiece is indeed an "HS". They said "would imagine it an earlier facing than you've seen. The mouthpiece came with a Selmer R.I. clarinet that dates to 1931". Not familier with a Selmer R.I. clarinet either, BT or CT yes but not a RI. Wilber or Hedges probably know something about this as they were both playing CTs at one time.

I do not have the mouthpiece (yet).

Thanks
Jim

R.I. stands for "Radio Improved"-the predecessor to the Balanced Tone and Centered Tone models. Can't help on the HS question...

I think the HS was one of the original facings, I believe it was somewhat closer than the later HS* and HS** ---- I used to see quite a few HS mouthpieces.

Jim - I'm quite well acquainted with the Selmer RI cl having "lucked-on" to one, a VG Full Boehm, which has a different barrel and UJ structure! It plays well, but not as well as my best C T!! A friend gave me a Selmer-Johnston HR mp which has HS in an oval on the table, believe it dates from the mid '30s, OK, but a bit close [for me] . The current IMS catalog [comprehensive!], pg 56, lists their "standard series" of facings with the HS followed by HS* etc, from which order I assume HS to be their least tip-opened mp. It, however, is shown on the [lower] comparison chart as "HS, *," in the "minimum" [below 1.0 mm] location, which I assume means that both are less than 1 mm! Measure it if you able. Others, please help. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

TKS, Vytas and Richard, for the modern-day Selmer mp dimensions, I'll bookmark the site also. Rev , the Oval-on-table mps are so old, and prob. those still-extant, have been refaced [or tinkered with] so measurements will be unreliable. My IMS charts show tips of the B and C to be in the 1.01 MM column, and the facing length as 28-29 MM, SO on the latter do we have a measurement method or an Eng/metric conflict vs the 19 ?mm? figure posted? Could the IMS figure be the length of the "windcut" ?? HELP!Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I was checking on a mouthpiece recently and I was told the tip opening was 1.12mm and the facing was Brand 32. I asked what does Brand 32 mean as I had never heard of a facing length described like that. I was told that Brand 32 means the length of the facing is 16mm . Hope this helps.

To standardize facing measurements and to allow comparison between brands and styles of mouthpieces Erick Brand came up with a glass gauge ruled in half millimeters.

Brand 32 is 16mm

Don, I have also book marked the Selmer site. When looking at the Bb clarinet chart, the CP100 series shows facing lengths of 27. The Standard and C85 series shows 17, 18 and 19. I don't know what the 27 could mean? All are listed under the Bb & A chart. To the right of the Eb chart it says length in mm. When you click on the mm up pops a window. It shows that they are measuring from the tip to where the trunion starts? Go figure? I have attached the chart. Hope its Ok - Mark.
