Who's excited? I know I am!
I actually want to meet a lot of you since this would be the first year I get to go. Clarinetfest was never around my way until Summer 2004.
So how do I go about meeting people? Do I just go around saying "hi, I'm contragirl, who are you?" lol
I've seen David Spiegelthal in The Clarinet for last month. Good job! I might be able to recognize him haha!

I figure what I'll do (as dorky as it will be) is I'll probably wear a one of those stick on name tags with my name and then my posting name underneath. Although my name should be enough of a clue. I mean, there's not much difference between "alexi" and "sfalexi" now, is there?

Most Clarinetfests have a main message board set up, usually near the registration desk. Just post a notice for a get together...GBK

Hmmm. Perhaps after the new website is up we can take polls for impromptu duets, trios, quartets with other message board members. Could mean a bit of fun . . .

Take a look back through Mark's pictures of ClarinetFest 2003 for a rogues gallery of players. In the past Mark has given us a little sticker for our name badges - I won't put him on the spot for future work however - that indicates that we are Woodwind.org sponsors. ClarinetFests are a very friendly and casual atmosphere for the most part and many of the "Famous" and "Infamous" just talk with everyone as normal people. It is not surprising that many of the giants in the community are really very humble people that are more than willing to give advise and help to the future generation of younger players and us older group of passionate but non-career players. Just be courteous if they have other committments or are scheduled for a performance in 30 minutes. I would recommend that younger players try to make it to a ClarinetFest to experience all the fine performances by world class players and the opportunity to make lasting friendships with fellow players and set up networks that will help you in your future professional or recreational endeavors.

fest will be held in Washington DC at the Univ. of Maryland near end of July.
God willing I will be there.
You will be issued a name badge in order to get into differant functions and in the past Mark had us put a color code on the badge and he has tried to set up a lunch date.
Looking forward to the trip.

Bob, do you remember me from clarinetfest 2003? We talked on the bus back from the eddie daniels concert! ( : I hope your son(s) are doing well... i can't remember but i think there was two...
Micaela, (this is kristin- hartwick kristin) I went last summer at Salt Lake City... it was so worth it and a lot of fun! We will have to meet up sometime now that you're in the Philadelphia area! Did PDQ Bach go to Swarthmore? Ha ha... ( : Do you study with Alison Herz?

If things go according to plan I hope to rent part of a vendor's booth and show off some of my restored vintage clarinets, and maybe do some mouthpiece refacing 'while U wait". Looking forward to seeing lots of y'alls there (including Contragirl, of course!).
I had hoped our clarinet choir would be performing at C'Fest next year but our 'audition' tape (actually an edited concert tape) frankly stank and we didn't make the cut --- I'm rather bummed about that..........

I've been ignoring this thread before I had the information that it's going to be HERE IN COLLEGE PARK! I'm in the UMCP community band, and we weren't told (yet?) that a Clarinetfest would be held in the same building that we use for rehearsals!
I wasn't at the event last year, but obviously plan to do the 5 minute commute to the event. Woa, this is so cool! ![[grin]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie5.gif)
There's a nice Chinese buffet near the corner of Rte. 1 and University Blvd. I like. Perhaps we maybe could schedule a meal there for those who enjoy Chinese?

As we get closer to the date check into the Klarinet mailing list. Some of us locals (i am Delaware) are trying to put together a crab fest and introduce these fine people to some REAL crabs. I am psyched-up. This will be my first and most likely my last clarinet fest until it comes this close again. My wife thinks clarinet players are weird and should not be allowed to meet in large groups. But she plans to come watch----maybe as some type of perverse entertainment. She is not fully aware yet that I plan on buying a higher end clarinet that week and retire my old (1958) student grade Conn director.

My girlfriend and I will be attending. She's right here and says, "no", but I know that she's very very nice and will willingly go because she knows it means so much to me. (BTW, she's reading this as I type). And she just hit me. But she'll be there and so will I.
I can't wait to bring my clarinet and find willing participants to try out each others horns and do some duetting, trios, quartets, anything we can find and play in the comfort of a small hotel room or maybe a balcony.

Speaking of chairs... they don't have anything really high enough for contrabass playing. I steal the conductor's chair. haha
As good as CSPAC is (our music home), there are a few imperfections... but I also have all my classes there everyday and I know it inside out, flaws and all. It's a great building. It will most likely take place around the halls, in the lobby. We have a recital hall, a concert hall, a theatre and a lab theatre. It's like a mini Kennedy Center!
We have lots of practice rooms, each with a Steinway piano (Concert grands, most of them anyway). 3am practicing is not unusual, but you have to have card access to get in after 11pm.
As for crabs... no one knows them better than me! I grew up in Southern Maryland, surrounded by the Patuxant, the Potomac and the Bay. We definately went crabbing a lot when I was younger. The secret to steaming your crabs is beer and Old Bay... no one knows that. Haha! But the main problem is that crabs are becoming rare, so usually they are expensive, females, and/ or small. (Not sexist, but males have more meat).
We'll teach all you out-of-towners about good seafood. Suggestions: Rock Fish, trout, oysters and Blue crabs. I hate fish, but shellfish is yummy... especially crabs!
Of course, we are also about 30 minutes from DC, so if you haven't seen the nations capitol... or if you haven't gotten the chance to moon the White House... here's your chance! Baltimore is also about 30 minutes away, the inner harbor is the place to be. Clarinets can be fun for so long, then you need to get a drink or go out to eat. :-D
Hey Dave, I was hoping that I could get my clarinet choir that was still in the process of forming to play at clarinetfest. I guess you have to audition? I don't know much about it, but I know who is organizing Clarinetfest. I should ask her about it. lol

Another cultural choice would be the free, daily 6 pm concerts at the Kennedy Center. They play in the lobby for an hour before the crowd comes for the later performance.
Contragirl, please let me know when you find out how to get a group to perform. I play in a professional quartet, and I'm sure they'd love to participate! We've been together for years, and have a wide repetoire. I'd even swipe the large binders of the other 3 players so we could jam together somewhere. Does that sound like a good plan???

Maybe to late to get your choirs on the agenda but........
combining sfalexi's and contragirl's ideas of improptu choirs and drinking at the inner harbor.....
we could all walk into Phillips crabhouse with our clarinet in tow and treat all the customers to real music. then after a few drinks take the show to Skipjacks. If we really get rolling then we can take a marching choir on a casual stroll down "the block". Now that would be unusual. howbiet a bit tacky.
it is july so there is always a chance of an Oriole's ballgame.
spoken like a local I must say that it is a great location--being between DC and Balt. Entertainment possibliltis are endless. Don't forget the Smithsonian eitther.
