 Do metal and crystal clash?
Author: Toncek

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a new ligature for my old A2 crystal mouthpiece. Is there any reason I should avoid a metal one and choose from one of the Rovners?

Thanks.

Not that I have noticed. I use an M Lurie lig on my Pomarico bass cl mps and a Bonade on my Pom alto quite successfully. Having several Rovner types, I often reverse them so as to grip the [soprano's] reed [on the edges] like the Bonade does. I'm not sure that makes much diff in my sounds, tho. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

NCA (No Anticipated Clash) ---- like Don above, I've been using a metal ligature (inverted Vandoren "Masters") with my Pomarico crystal bass clarinet mouthpiece for about two years now --- seems to sound slightly better than my backup Rovner ligature; and on Bb clarinet I'm now using a Harrison inverted metal lig with a crystal RIA mouthpiece, and so far the neighbors and donkey haven't complained about my sound. Go for it!

I don't think it'd scratch it up at all. That would be my main concern. If you are worried about it scratching or slipping at all on the mouthpiece you can put a very thin mouthpiece patch on the side of the mouthpiece to have it protected/grip better. I don't think you'd have to, but it wouldn't hurt.

I have used metal ligatures on my glass/crystal mouthpieces for years. No slipping or scratching problem at all. I have run into a size problem thou, but some of the ligature makers offer small & large, at least Bay does. I had more trouble with the plastic ligature(s) in slipping. My favorite is the inverted Bay.

Many thanks for your quick responces.

I was a little nervous about scatches, but more nervous about doing more damage, like cracking it somehow. I went to the Vandoren site to see if they had any information that could be handy and was surprised to learn that they had stopped making the A2 a while back. Since it would be so difficult to find a replacement, I thought I'd ask for some advice. I'm kind of leaning towards the Vandoren Optimum, but I'll have to wait and see how it fits. I'm sure it would be better than the plastic thing I have now.

Again, many thanks.
