Performance/education Degree holders : Where did you graduate from?
Author: cyso_clarinetist

I am just curious to see who on this board has graduated with a performance or education degree. This also applies to people who are in college or entering college who are performance based. Specify which degree (or both if you have them).

Thanks.

Hi,

BSEd in Music Education from Ohio University.

MEd from Kent State and PhD from BGSU in education fields but not music.

I've moved to college teaching in another field, aviation. I have all the avaition ratings through CFII-ME and ATP with C-500 Type rating. Still play woodwinds professionally.

Both performance and education degrees from the University of Colorado. I am now a banker....no reflection on my education, though.

Outside of the USA it is less common to do a "degree" in performance. At conservatories in Europe you normally receive a diploma at the end of your studies. (Which makes more sense to me- a degree is supposed to be an acedemic study!) Are you also interested in those who received diplomas in performance?

Gretchen--since you asked, here is the "rest of the story."

I recently retired after teaching instrumental music classes (band and strings) for 34 yrs. I continue to perform in many orchestral, band and jazz ensembles, and like John Moses, no one (since I started playing professionally in high school) has ever asked to see any of my diplomas, nor have they worried about "who" I studied with--just how "good" I play.

I still hold a State of WI Lifetime Teaching Certificate and continue to substitue teach for my old school district, but the most requested document that I hold has always been my AF of F musicians union card--and if they don't keep raising the age requirment, I may someday attain Life Member in our local 166 union as well.

well gretchen,

I am currently playing clarinets (mostly bass, some Eb and a lot of little clarinet) in Orquesta Sinfonica UANL, monterrey, mexico. I also teach a small studio of 15 clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone students.

and my motto is will sacrifice anything to keep playing another day.

Hi Everyone,

Several previous posters have mentioned that no one asks to see their degree. No one has asked for any of mine once I began to established my playing credentials. However, IMHO few of us would have acquired the necessary skills if we had not been in a very structured education or performance curriculum on our way to a degree/diploma.

I just don't want some of the younger members of the BB to think they don't need a degree and can just make it on their own. While there are always exceptions, that's a pretty hard way to go.

I noticed a lot of degrees from Northwestern, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice about the dorms, etc. as I'm going to music camp there in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

it's interesting to know that all of you are still in music and doing VERY well too...that's great. So many times I hear at school that almost 80% of music majors don't end up in music after all of that hard work because they can't get a job, or because they decide that a career in music is just too difficult. But I'm inspired by all of you who are still in music, because that's what I hope to do all my life. :) thanks for answering even though it wasn't my original question! (sorry cyso_clarinetist) :)

BA - University of Illinois
MM - Manhattan School of music,

both as performance degrees. Now, 2+ years out of school, I make most of my $$ teaching privatly, which I love, but they don't really prep you for that as a performance major - which I think they should since just about EVERYBODY teaches at some point! I take all the gigs that come my way, but getting "established" can take some time. No one will ask to see your degree before they hire you for a local gig, but if you're applying to take orchestral auditions, they are important!

Gretchen:

Frequently Music Majors end up doing _something_ in _some_ musical field, just not the one they dreamt about during their undergrad years.

My story: I felt during my 16-21 year old period that I would make the best darn principal clarinetist any orchestra would ever have. Of course, I was lazier than I should have been to fulfill this dream! And during grad school I realized that I would not enjoy the lifestyle that achieving this goal would require. I didn't want to practice 8-12 hours a day just to perfect orchestral excerpts, MAYBE get an orchestra gig, and then "have" to play all the music the way the "man with the stick" wanted it played.

I realized that I needed my own say in what I performed and how I performed it. For example, I HATE Tchaikovsky. No hate mail please, but I really really don't like it! ;) At any rate, I realized that if I were in an orchestra, I'd have to play some Tchaik at some point...LOL!!

At any rate, after taking a three-year hiatus from playing at all, I "found" international folk music, got most of my chops back, and really found a way to keep playing and make some money doing it. I've played Balkan music professionally now, and have started a chamber group (clarinet, violin, and accordion) and really want to make sure my career is one I want. I've also been private teaching for 5 years now, and really enjoy that too.

Oh yeah, and I wasn't completely out of the music loop while I wasn't playing and before I started teaching: I've worked music retail (cd's) for nearly 10 years now, and had been working on a musicology degree...

So don't rule anything out when you're young, like I did!

Sorry this was so long! :)

Katrina

Katrina:

That's quite a story, but i'm glad you told it...I'm currently going to be a junior performance major, and I'm starting to think of things that I want to do when I get out of school...like you, and pretty much everyone on the planet (it seems) I want to play in an orchestra, but I know that that dream isn't going to be fulfilled right away. So I'm a little worried about what I'm going to do with my life until then. I definately want to teach privately though...but I'm glad you're happy and you're still playing and enjoying music the way you want to. Go you! :)
