I would just like to add that the spine in the tip, which of course is completely necessary, isn't very thick. One of my past teachers called it "fuzzies" - just leaving some soft smooth cane down the middle, and to the end, of the tip. What that does is keep the tip open, so (like johnt said) the low notes respond. If there is no structure in the tip area, the reed will collapse under air pressure. The best way to make that happen is to just never scrape down the middle of the reed - ever! Always aim for the sides (tip and heart area) or the "channels" on either side of the spine, in the back.
