I will agree with you on that, as a general rule. Of course I'd never make the finals for a symphonic principal chair audition, but for a doubling flutist, I play much better than the expectation. A vast majority of my friends *are* dedicated professional flutists, and I feel no shame in playing with them, as I am not entirely untrained, nor a "casual" flutist, as I spent approximately one year as a private student of Carol Wincenc, and have taken several masterclasses with the likes of Jeanne Baxstresser, Emmanuel Pahud, and Alexa Still.
However, I see your point, and it still stands.
