And as they're made from fabric, they won't tear like paper - sax players also do this with sticky pads.

Evelyn Rothwell mentioned using them to clean reeds with in her reedmaking book by placing the corner of a note between the blades, pressing the reed flat and then pulling the note out to clean the insides.
