You can simulate the resistance of a reed by pinching the straw nearly closed at its midpoint with your fingers. But I recommend beer instead of water... just because all things oboe-related seem to work better with beer. Given the season, for best results use Avery's Old Jubilation or Great Divide's Hibernation Ale.
