Does the student know that he is playing flat? If so, does he consciously try to correct it? Often, it is a lack of sensitivity to the sound that he is producing rather than bad technique. If he doesn't realize that the pitch is in another direction, nothing will help. I hope you tried that reed and oboe! All the best!
