Well, it seems to have been a few things together; biting, poor air support and length of soaking. Looks like either one or the other wasn't affecting things too much but three together were causing problems.
Cutting the soaking time, spending lots of time just doing scales and tones to concentrate on lip pressure, and making sure to keep the air pressure up and not blow each note separately all have helped. I managed finally to complete an hour's practice today on just one reed.
