Hmm .. that may not be the case; even though the BLANK will have longer parallel sides, the finished reed will be exactly the same. This is because the tie-point will still be at that part of the shape which exactly matches the circumference of the staple-tip. The finished length of the reed will in all probability be the same in both cases. You just chop of more of the tip to achieve the same finished length.

Attached, the the diagram from David Weber/Ferald B. Capps "The Reed Maker's Manual", which shows the cane pushed down between the ears. As I said, two different ways of placing the cane, with no real advantage to either. However, since they result in different tie-lengths it is important to mention the method used if giving tie-length measurements.
