Has anyone tried the Buffet Festival? Is it really worth the money to pay a couple more hundreds over than the R13's with silver keys? What are your experiences with the Eb lever, does it get in the way? How is the sound compared to the R13?
Thanks...

I always recommend it over the R13 to customers. Essentially the same instrument with 4 features that the R13 lacks:
- Unstained Wood
- 65mm & 66mm barrels
- left hand Eb lever
- GoreTex pads
The first 2 really arent "improvements" but are nice. The Eb lever is a great key but by no means a needed thing.
However, I feel the pad upgrade is HUGE and itself worth the $200 difference in the price between a silver plated key R13 and the Festival.

The sound is more deep and powerful and the register key is 2mm(rather than 3 don't remember) higher that makes also for different pitch. I use a 440 pitched mouthpiece and with 660mm barrel I can easily tune to 441(and 442 very well warmed up) but 440 is a bit difficult because I have to pull the barrel 2mm out and also the middle joint and bell to get comfortably down to 440. 650mm barrel is good for 442+ pitch.
On the R13 660mm barrel is about dead on for 440 and I really need to use 650mm barrel to tune to 442. We usually here in Iceland use 442 pitch but sometimes pianos are tuned to 440 and 441pitch.

Does somebody knows if there is any real differences between in the the Festival and regular R13 bells? Are they interchangeable or not?
Thanks.

I believe this has come up before- i can't say for certain but it is my understanding that the Festival bells are the same but with less "choke" at the tenon. Choke is referring to the constriction in the bore at the bell tenon- if you look down the bore of the bottom joint of an R13 (with bell attached) you can actually see the step where the bell meets the lower joint.
I know R13 players who have had the entry bore of the bell opened up so it is more like the Festival.

I will look into it. Next week I'm going to a local clarinet shop in Hollywood. I will measure a few and report back.
