Hi,
There's a seller on ebay promoting a "brand new" tenor sax by a company called Helmke by German Engineering. Looks like a gret deal, but I have never heard of this manufacturer and I can't find anything on the internet. Has anyone heard of this brand of instrument? Better yet, has anyone played one?
Thanks,
Richard

the "German Engineering" rhetoric is an obvious ploy. Instruments marketed as such are by reputation very poor. Mechanisms fail readily, parts are hard to get for them, intonation is lacking, and a lot of respectable technicians will refuse to work on "instruments" like the one you described here.

I just purchased this black Helmke Tenor on ebay and in my opinion the sound is better than any MKVI or any tenor that I have owned. Well, you may not believe it, besides preferences in sound are subjective. But since you have asked... If I can play Giant Steps with the same ease on this black helmke, except for the left hand D, Eb, F keys, and right-hand side keys being all too low, and find the sound quality/production BETTER than my previous engagements - I call this tenor well under-rated pro instrument. The horn came in without a single leak, all tight and this does contribute to ease of playing. One of these days, I will get me a website where I can have the option to post some playing of mine so this discussion doesn't end here. Another reason for this instrument not being a student horn is that... you may not want to hear it, but it's definitely for people with bigger hands. If you'd like to get a horn where everything is "together", it'd be at least $2,000 more to compensate. But I doubt that the more expensive horns will have better sound, on contrary, you are just buying the "action," and to get the sound, it'll be another thousand or two plus overhaul. Here, you spend $289 and see a repairman to mand the sax to your hands for a couple of hundred bucks at most. Then you go practice for a few hours a day and come back in a few years and get yourself a website with your music. Remember Dexter on Conn 10M and everybody else on MKVI? If his Conn haven't been stolen, I doubt we'd see him with anything else. I played 10M/30M, the action is much worse than this Helmke -Pempke!

First of all, I wouldn't listen to anything that Val person says. I've been researching the Helmke saxes for a while now, and every forum I go to I see a post by that Val person, and it is the same exact one everywhere I go. So I think it is just a big scam.

You can get a good name-brand sax by checking with music stores for good deals on used Conns, Yamahas, etc. Also take a mouthpiece with you with lig and reed so you can try horns at pawn shops, they often have good buys in quality instruments. Sometimes, pawn shops have really nice ones stashed "in back" that they'll bring out as soon as they sense that you're serious about it.
Forget about "Val's" postings--this is an obvious fraud that is simply a plant for a company that can't get anyone to say anything good about their wares, so they infect the internet with phony testimonials. Watch out for any company on e-Bay selling what appears to be instruments with weird names, gimmicky features and freebie stuff like a "free" watch (!) if you buy their junk. Get the best you can afford and you'll have a friend for life.

I personally think "Helmke" is not even a legit sax company. Last summer my parent's bought me a tenor sax off ebay by a brand name of wexler. I never heard of it and the company didn't seem to have an official website. The seller was adeal4-u or somethin like that on ebay. The sax completely sucked, even both my band directors agreed. So we returned it, and I used a school owned selmer. Now, I need a new alto, b/c I originally played alto and have had it for six years and it is practically falling apart. So i checked ebay today. Now the same guy is selling cheap saxes by the name of "Helmke". Same stupid page with the dancing balloon dudes, same sax case, same everything except the name change. O, and now it has SERIAL NUMBERS! They make a big deal about it sayin serial numbers make it legit or some crap. Utter b.s. Avoid these fakes at all costs! You will just end up returning it anyways and losing your s&h money!

I recently bought I black Helmke Alto Sax on ebay for $259. It is worth at least four times that and play better than my old selmer sax. It has excellent response and has a sound that is to die for. My band teacher was skeptical, but I've had it for 3 weeks and it still plays like a dream. I would recommend it to anyone needing a good cheap sax. You can't go wrong for the price.

I bought a red Helmke soprano and I love the horn. Shure it's not as heavy duty as a Selmer but what do you expect. It is a very good sounding horn and plays very easy. You might want to get a good mouthpiece though. Intonation is a little bit off but not noticable for a beginer and easy to ajust if you know how to use your jaw! I would and do recomend these horns for beginers or even pro's who want to add to there fun arsinal. Just remember that this horn needs a little extra TLC and for the price it's worth it. Eric

I just bought a helmke tenor. I also play alto ( buescher trutone) and bari (Conn). THe helmke was cheap, but I bought it because of the SOUND. I played it, compared it to 4 other horns, some new, some vintage. It was SPOT ON intonationwise. Is it a pro horn. NO. Will many repair shops work on it? NO. would I buy one online without playing it? NO!!!! But I bought it from a repair guy and he says he can keep it going. So far I am very pleased and it SOUNDS GREAT. isnt that what we want from a sax?
