Hi- I just purchased a Gemeinhart Silver SP flute. I haven't received it in the mail yet but I would like some opinion as to whether this would seem to be a good deal for a beginner such as myself. I play in the community theater , usually saxophones and clarinets (base and soprano) so I thought adding a flute would certainly help. Have doubled in flute only once and that was part of a section.(Me and My Girl )- used a student model from my school in that production but thought it would be good to have one around to stay in shape. I payed $140.00. They said it is 6 yrs old and has only been used for 1 year. Naturally, after I bought it I started to see comments as to flutes that are better than this brand etc. Should I have cold feet about this purchase?

I use a 35 year old Gemeinhart 3M student model for the community theater work. Would never play a recital on it but it works for me. The key will be that once you get yours in the mail, start working on tone and technique. In fact, if you can afford the time, spend almost all of you practice time on the flute. I just finished a run of CITY OF ANGELS and played primarily the Reed 1 book. During the run I spent a lot of time with the flute, just to stay sharp.
AND...get a good teacher, at least to cover the fundamentals. You won't regret it.

Hi there,
I'm not terribly up on Gemeinharts but I think in your situation it sounds like it should be fine (as long as it's in good working order!). I played for quite awhile on an old Bundy (ah.. the good ol' days)
In my experience it takes awhile dedicated to learning an instrument before differences in models are even detectable to a player. What matters most is that the instrument works well.
Just my 2 cents

Gemeinhardt is a well-respected brand. As long as it is in good playing condition, you will do fine with it.
Just remember, you have to practice--or it doesn't make any difference what brand you get.

Jaysne, you said it ALL with this. James Galway would sound terrific with a student model flute.
