Heliman --
Very good summary of how to use Ebay. I did violate a couple of your rules when I bought my 411. The seller was someone who had created an account just to sell this instrument, so they hadn't been Ebay members very long, didn't have any feedback, and required a cashier's check in payment. (I agree with you that PayPal is the best choice for conducting this sort of transaction.)
However, I did ask a lot of questions, got detailed letters back from both husband and wife, and even had a couple of phone calls with them. The oboe belonged to their teenaged son, and something unfortunate had happened so that he was no longer physically able to play. It was very difficult for them to part with this instrument, as the young man had shown great promise. They were AT LEAST as concerned about MY trustworthiness, and my intentions for the instrument, as I was with theirs!
So, tell me, if you will, why do you want to play the oboe? (You're a guitarist, right?) And what did you get for your "starter"?
Good luck to you!
Susan
