... semi-automatic = you manually palm 2nd 8ve and it closes 1st 8ve vent even if your thumb's still on the thumb octave, most American oboes favor this system
... fully automatic = you don't have to do anything at G' / A'' transition, the extra mechanism does it automatically for you up and down, and you only have to thumb 1st 8ve, this system is popular in Europe
Thumb-plate mechanically permits fingering B-flat and C on the top joint only, no need to use R1 on F# key, thumb-plate system is popular in UK
dual system oboes can do both conservatory fingering and thumb-plate fingering
