i use five knives: a Landwell double hollow ground (razor), great for tip work, an Italian straight razor for chopping tips on the block, a Landwell bevel knife for general scraping, and two single ground beveled knife (a hybrid, curved on one side, beveled on the other), one of which is great for bark removal, the other which is just a wonderful knife that isn't sold anymore (i've had it for a long time). The double hollow ground knife gets the sharpest and has the finest touch, i just don't like wasting that edge on coarse scraping. I've used razor blades for chopping tips but I don't like it as much as using a knife - I get more leverage and a cleaner cut. But...i agree, you should be able to make a reed with any properly sharpened blade. I hate sharpening knives, which is one reason I own so many - I usually sit down and sharpen them all at once.
