Excellent. I'm glad to hear there are users of both Howarth and Covey participating here.
I've been trying out a Covey Classic the past few days, and I've been quite impressed. One question, though. There is a "pop" when the pads come down against the tone holes that is noticeably louder than on most other oboes I've played. It's not key noise, and there are no bumper corks missing. It's actually the sound of the pad striking the tone hole rim. I'm speculating that this is perhaps because the tone hole inserts are a harder substance than grenadilla? Those of you who play Covey, have you noticed the same? If so, does this noise increase or diminish as the instrument ages?
I don't think this would be a big issue for me, as I'm sure I'd get used to the noise eventually. When I record myself on this instrument at various distances, I find that the "popping" noise does not project far, not does it disrupt the fluidity of my legato playing. It's mostly just an annoyance. Just wondering if others have noticed the same...
Regarding Howarth, if the XL is Howarth's answer to the Royale, is the S5 roughly equivalent to the regular Loree? I've tried several XL's, and I've been quite impressed by the projection, intonation, and especially by the quality and comfort of the keywork. However, the sound is heavier than I would prefer, and the instrument is also literally a bit too heavy for comfort. So now I'm thinking about trying out the S5, if it is indeed a lighter instrument, but of equivalent quality. What do you all think? Also, it's my understanding that Howarth makes some (or all?) of its oboes with plastic lined top joints nowadays. Is that just the XL's, or the S5's too?
Cheers,
Drew
