Indeed, I was surprised as well when I learned there existed a piece for oboe solo by Samuel Barber. Most of the repertoire for oboe lies in the baroque and classical periods, and it seems that much that is Romantic is never played much or well-known. The Canzonetta is a prime example of a piece that fits this profile - written by a post-modernist composer of great calibur, and yet, almost never performed. I have never quite grasped the reason why there are so many pieces like this - perhaps due to the difficulty of them? Regardless, there is far more Romantic and modern repertoire for the solo oboe than it would first appear. I am very interested, as a disliker of baroque and most classical music, in finding pieces that were composed later than 1850. If anyone finds any pieces like that besides the obvious (Saint-Saens, Francaix, Strauss and the like), please post on this board.
