Definitely not. Unless your gouge is not correct and encourages them to do so.

The overlap should make a "click" sound when you overlap, which shows you that the sides are "grabbing" against each other. If it doesn't, then there's something wrong with your gouge.

There are also some techniques you can do in your scrape to encourage the sides to grab against each other and keep the overlap tight.
