A certain hissiness as air moves through the reed.. a sizzle, helps with projection. It is not heard far from the cor but when Dick White demonstrated it for me it was remarkable how easily he projected and how even the tone color became a few feet away.

He emphasized learning how the projected sound was and not to worry about making a beautiful sound around your own head. So, recording and playback was an important thing as well to promote the cor's tonal concepts.

He had a fairly small basement studio, pretty well carpeted and 'dry' and I could always hear the sizzle when he played down there.

Sometimes, we would do lessons up stairs in his very large living room and he could demonstrate the projection and tone color he was after.

He played Laubins. He used coloration fingerings a lot in the 2nd octave, and also did that for oboe.

Before we got chased out (3rd warning and they meant it!), he would have me come to Monday afternoon symphony rehearsels at the Kennedy Center in Wash. D.C., listen to the rehearsel then give me a lesson in the dressing rooms the principal players had down stairs.

Hearing his cor sound in the orchestra was really what convinced me about his approach. He could also pick up my Loree and make great sounds with his or my reeds.

My Loree cor is GG62... I think I bought it in 1982.
