Knife technique is the single hardest skill I have ever learned in my entire life (a distant 2nd and 3rd is driving in Seoul Traffic, and swimming the butterfly), and I can't imagine anyone trying to learn how to do so without watching an expert, or even feeling how they do it. When I was a student, my teacher would come around me, and grasp my hand, as my hand grasped the knife, and operate my wrist as if I were a dummy or something.
My advice is to just wait until you meet up with your teacher. Cane is expensive, and messing up reeds by learning knife technique is even more expensive. But if you must, you can go to patty's website which has a basic oboe reedmaking tutorial as well as links to other oboe reedmaking tutorials..
