My teacher didn't really refuse to help. He just said that by massively adjusting a reed which was made to play at 442 in an oboe calibrated to play at 442 it would effect the tone. As I said he did scrape one for me which, when pulled out a tiny bit, plays at 440. He also told me where and how to scrape one myself (except that I am far from being an expert reed-maker yet and I'm not convinced that I will actually be able to produce a decent reed with no guidance). He said that had I told him a few weeks ago he could have tied one on longer than usual for me so it is partly my own fault for springing it on him at my last lesson. He is actually very generous with his reeds. I pay him about £25 a year and he supplies all my reeds. I have never counted exactly how many he gives me but this year I think I must have had at least ten as he was getting me to play on slightly harder reeds and so kept changing them.

My question was really is it true that different manufacturers calibrate their oboes to different pitches?

As for the rain, well I grew up in the UK so I know what it is like and here the weather is currently more like April than July.
