If I understand your description of the separation of the blades near the tip correctly, I have found that the separation is more likely to be present if the oval staple opening is flatter (as compared with rounder). For experimentation, find a reed with this problem and which you no longer care about on a staple you are willing to ruin. Insert your mandral. Take a rounded blade pliers and squeeze the sides of the staple (by "sides", I mean the edges below where the blades of cane meet) at a point @ 3mm below the top of the staple. Your mandral should prevent you from squeezing too much. Note that the separation between the blades closes (and also the opening of the reed closes somewhat). If that process produces a good result for you, then look for a staple which is sold with an opening closer to the one you have produced (either take the experimental reed apart, or look through the base of the staple to ascertain the shape of the new opening).
Also check to see that you tie the cane on in a fashion where the sides close just two or three (maybe three or four if you are using thinner EE thread) turns before the top of the staple, and that you have not tied beyond the staple end. I have also noted that it is possible to wind the thread too tightly, which might prompt the blades to separate near the tip. (This is one reason to use the thinner thread -- if it breaks during the tying process, I am tying too tightly.)
And of course, check to see that the gauged cane you choose lies straight, and has no curve or arc which might promote the blade separation you describe.
All that said, I have played reeds which were very good despite a slight blade separation at the tip.
With respect to timbre produced, I find darker, richer sound on my Marigaux and Laubin oboes on the Chudnow staples, and more vibrant sound on the Stevens staples.
