 Staples and Cane Placement

I've looked through the archives at some of the other discussions regarding staples, but I thing I don't see addressed is how different staples affect the blades of the reed. In my limited experience, the biggest effect of changing staples is on the placement of the cane. With Chudnow staples, I could never get the tips of the blades to meet, even when the blades sealed well near the staple. I tried tying the cane on more and less in attempts to solve this problem, but without success. With the Dunkel staples I've mostly been using, gapping at the tip is never a problem, but reeds seem to close down quickly, and I need to tie the cane further down onto the staple to get the sides to close near the staple. Upon the recommendation of Howard, I recently tried the Guercio d12 staples, which are different still; the cane will seal when tied further off the staple, but there is once again a slight tendency for the blades to gap at the tip.

It seems to me that the top opening of the staple is only one part of the equation; how parallel the surfaces of the staple are where the cane is tied on would also seem to affect the opening (or gapping) at the tip. I say this because the Chudnow has the biggest opening of the staples I have, and the Guercio has the smallest, but both cause more gapping of the blades at the tip than the Dunkel, which has an intermediate opening at the tip of the staple.

(Note: all experiments above done with Gilbert -1N shaped cane).

OK, enough background: my questions are these: When people talk about "trying different staples" and getting different tone, etc, are they including in such evaluations the effect of the staple on the cane? Or do more experienced reedmakers have any tips or tricks for minimizing the effects of the staple on the relative placement of the cane, so that the principal effect of the staple is due to the bore shape? Does it make sense to try differently shaped cane with different staples, or does that result in such a confusing mess of variables that one can never figure out the "best" way for an oboist to make his or her reeds?
