Re: When is a good time to move up to a harder reed?

Look up on this topic in the thread...reeds are always talked about. I think there was one on "hardness vs softness" recently. I can't remember the title.

The general principle, however, is that the reed's function must suit your capabilities. But don't confuse reed hardness with skill. Better players don't play on harder reeds, they play on better reeds. The hard reed of your teachers that you played on is not a good reed for you - I'm sorry, it just isn't. It may have a rich sound for her, but if you can't play on it for more than 15 minutes, it has to be changed so that you can.

As you improve and start (or continue) making your own reeds, you will unconciously make harder or softer reeds based on what feels best. To me, a reed is good when it responds with no effort, yet accepts a lot of air, so that I can play loud in the low register. (Of course this reed is stable and plays at pitch) Therefore, I always make the reed so it feels like that.
