I found this old IDRS article by Stuart Dunkel to be useful when trying out new oboes recently:

After taking the oboe through its paces on scales, slurs, etc., I do feel it is important to play some difficult technical music that you feel you can play with facility on the oboe you've been playing on...for me, that's the acid test.
