Re: Musings on the gullibility of oboe buyers (not me, thank goodness)

Well, take heart, the oboe will never truly be a mass market item until they're selling them at Wal-Mart. [grin]

I've actually seen other El Cheapo no-brand instruments for sale at Christmastime at an upscale department store we used to have here where I live. They usually had clarinets, flutes, trumpets, and alto saxes, intended for the well-meaning but clueless giftgiver. Little Johnny's eyes are supposed to light up, there under the Christmas tree. "Oooh, a real trumpet!" disregarding the fact that it'll bend as soon as you set it down too hard, and that he should have been given it back in September so he could start trumpet with the rest of his class.

Or like plastic recorders--you can buy $1 plastic soprano recorders at every Dollar Tree in America, which I find personally depressing. The recorder is an ancient and noble instrument, and deserves better than to be a throwaway stocking-stuffer toy of the moment. But there they are.

So until oboes get to that point, I think we're safe. Let's all pause a minute and give thanks for our...um...challenging...embouchure (I was about to say "hellish" [grin] ), and the demands of the Almighty Reed, which serves to keep oboes off the shelves at Wal-Mart. [grin]
