There are (at least) two volumes of oboe studies by David Hite titled Melodious and Progressive Studies. I could never find book 1 anywhere, but I do have book 2 for oboe (which I think is more challenging than Ferling). I have the Saxophone book 1 which is really nice and melodic and would probably serve as a nice prequel to the oboe book 1. I can't imagine the oboe book 1 being as easy considering the stuff in oboe book 2.

My favorite oboe study is the Brod Etudes, 2 volumes. Very nice stuff in these, something for after progressing through Barret and I think more accessible than Ferling. RDG carries it in shop, haven't seen it online. They'd probably ship it.

Back to the subject of the Barret Method, while the Schuring edition is so much easier on the eyes and the ring binder is GREAT, it cuts out the following:
Principles of music introduction is missing
Scales & exercises section (up to p 54) is missing (Schuring has only articulation exercises)
Air Varie pieces (p207-219) is missing

If you're a member of the IDRS you can download some oboe methods for free, the Barret links are not working right now, but the Brod etudes are up. If the Barret links were working you could download good copies of the etudes missing from the Schuring edition (I'll ask about that in the IDRS board).
