Re: Italian oboe sound and school

The italian school, to my understanding, shares most of the traits of the french school. I wouldn't say there is as much distinction as there would be between, say, the french and german schools. But each individual school has its own traits, standards, and playing style (depending on the teacher there)
Italians use a modification of the french-style short scrape reed.

Keep in mind though, that this is the traditional school. A lot of european players are amalgamating reed scrape styles, or at least sound concepts. Younger players are drifting towards a warmer, less nasal sound, at least to some extent.
