 Italian oboe sound and school

I was listening to an opera with the La Scala Orchestra. The recording is from 1964. I think the oboist has a very distinct and mellow sound. Do the Italians have their own school? Are they influenced by any other school like the American form? What kind of scrape is it? I think they play very beautiful!

P.S.- I am now a new fan of Francesco Di Rosa, the newest principal of the La Scala Orchestra. Not only is he a buffet artist, but he plays quite nice!
