Oboists:
Isn't it nice these days to hear the oboe used in other music besides classical music. A few months back there was a post about oboe being heard in rock and pop. What about Jazz, avant-garde, and other "world music" styles? I'm really digging all the new sounds that are being "invented" with oboe. We all grew up hearing it in classical music and learned to love it. BUT, listen to this MP3 track, Siguiriya, on this website for A MOST UNIQUE and mystifying oboe sound. This has a great Flamenco yet jazzy (rather oxymoronic) sound to it and is a nice deviation from the norm.

And wow, the oboist's expression is amazing. Where does he get those reeds? How does he make them?!? The responsiveness and stability is amazing. Truly a great listen. See/listen for yourself!
Keep practicing oboists!

Here's another site where you can listen to cuts from the Oxymora CD.

Now, besides all the things that jrjinsa has said (above), there's another really salient thing that we all need to know.
The oboist on this CD is . . . one of our own active boardfolk . . . TA-DA!!
Craig Matovich, stand up and take a bow.
No, I am not kidding. We have a superstar in our midst.
And with ANY luck at all, he is going to teach me how to make those reeds!

... yeah, Craig, CHEERS!
IMO it's not all in the reeds -- soul of the player can do amazing things to emote and evoke 'unique' tone color -- can't cut that into any reed

Wow indeed. Craig has been holding out on us. I love the
group, and I love "Siguiriya". It's now on my desktop.
I really like the guitar too.
Thanks, Susan, for bringing the webpage to our attention.

First, thanks to my friends on the BBoard for the enthusiastic response to my playing with Oxymora. Thundering Silence was originally done a while back and re-released with a couple new tunes in 2006. More to come with a new release ASAP. This is seriously fun stuff and I am very happy to be doing more with my old friends.
And secondly, but perhaps this should really be first, I consider Paul McCandless (Oregon, Paul Winter Consort, etc.) the true master of the genre.
Oregon in Moscow is simply fantastic,... also check out Oregon at Yoshi's, Northwest Passage, Beyond Words, Distant Hills, Troika, Ecotopia and definitley check out earlier works Out of The Woods and Roots in The Sky. There are others too, Oregon is simply amazing. McCandless plays oboe, ehorn, bass clarinet, soprano saxes, and wind controller mostly. Every album has at least a couple very special oboe and english horn pieces.
McCandless's own Cds are also very good...Heresey and Premonition are very good and feature his compositions, plus he did some work with Navigator.
It is a very respectable body of work. I got busy with IT and computer work for a couple decades, but now its all oboe again and I am a happy man!
Enjoy the diversity!
-Craig

We (Oxymora) are now working on tour dates across the country , really an I-70 tour for 2008 and beyond.
Some north to south routes as well, east coast, mid-west and California.
I hope to meet many BBoarders along the way... I am not sure if we will get to Europe but that is also in consideration.
I am probably too old to act like a 20-something traveling with a band from gig to gig, but still, am looking forward to it and all the fun and music along the way.
Also we are getting some good radio play now, mostly on folk and world music shows and happy for that.
It is SO MUCH FUN doing oboe and ehorn in a group like this. I am glad we did the reunion and are at it again. Hope to continue into serious geezer-hood in the process.
