Playing too high: I just meant don't try to play up in the upper octave much before you have an instructor who can help you. But curiousity is great when you are learning, just be prepared to have some of your "experiments" shot down!

If you haven't found an instructor, you might want to call the local symphony and see if their oboists give lessons, or if there is a college nearby that would be an option too. I strongly recommend at least having one or two "intro" lessons even if you can't afford regular weekly lessons at this point, just to make sure you're on the right track.

It is really valuable to hear a professional oboe player in person, demonstrating techniques for you and playing your reed/instrument. It's just not the same (although way better than nothing!) to listen to recordings (which I also recommend). I dunk reeds in listerine and rinse with water when I have to play student's reeds, I never play them if I am sick or they seem sick. I am one of those people who has to play the reed to know what it needs (for adjustment); but I have had teachers who never played my reeds.
