"Very often, people leave a bit of extra darkness at the point where the blend hits the sides, inhibiting side closure just a bit."
I do ALMOST exactly that, not at the point of blend, but slightly after. Usually the side of the blend point is scraped not thin but much cane is taken off. I have been trying very hard to produce a good slope and not so obvious change of tip area and heart (producing a good blend) and was advised to change the direction of the knife so that i scrape inwards from the sides.
"Third, there can develop dark bands (at the edge of the blend/heart and heart/windows) which will very much make articulating more difficult. Because the grain of the cane is more exposed at these points, they tend to absorb water and get thicker and stiffer. Make sure you have scraped these dark bands off, if they exist."
This is what exactly happened to my early reeds which i tried to make sound fuller and warmer. Now i see the logic behind the problem.
