It probably STILL has too much cane left on the reed! Young people tend to make over heavy reeds that do not articulate well! (e.g. me =p) If thinning the tip does not help, scrape the area between the tip and the heart (I don't know what you exactly call that in the American style) ever so slightly to improve vibration, if there's no vibration, no matter how good it sounds, it will not be a joy to play definitely.
