"is it even possible to restore an oboe that old? (the one on eBay). Why does the keywork look so crappy--- is it corroded inferior metal, or is it just the effects of age that could be restored? That poor thing looks like its keys will never move again....."
That's the sorry sight of neglect.
But not all is lost - an oboe in this poor state can be transformed from a rust bucket into one that looks almost like new (if it's worth doing) - clean it all up, replate all the keys, pillars, rings and fittings, polish the wood and recut all the toneholes, clean the bore and oil it, redo the logo and finish with a complete overhaul and that will resurrect the beast.
But at a cost due to the time involved to turn it around.
