Reading one of the previous topics about stuck swabs, I thought I might caution the world against another possible oboe hazard! To many of you this might sound as a very obvious thing that one should never do, for me however it was something I only discovered yesterday.
That is, exactly ten minutes before going into the pit to play Don Giovanni in Valencia under maestro Maazel's baton! I was in a hurry, and needed both my hands free, so I just put my sheetmusic between my lips while I picked up my oboe case and bag. A second later, I opened my mouth to take the music in my hand again, when a sharp pain eminated from my lips. No, the paper hadn't cut into my lips, it had actually sucked/glued to the inside of my lips, and when I opened my mouth it pulled off big chunks of flesh, leaving me bleeding profusely. Fortunately, I was only on stage music duty, so I spent the next hour holding an icecube against my lips and trying to stop the bleeding with kitchen paper.
So I guess that's a nice warning that mouths are not meant for holding sheetmusic...
