I have a Patricola S5 on it way to me (tries to suppress a squee). I have been playing a Rigoutat (on try out loan) from 1961/64 it had a crack and has been professionally pinned. There is nothing wrong with it and they are asking 3k for it. OK I digress.. I have not bonded with the Rigoutat for some valid but unfair reasons. I got the Rigoutat on the day my beloved dog died. So the weeks of playing with it have been sucky. Another reason is that I went from a 65 year old open holed Linton and I blowed soo hard and now that I have a Rigoutat I find the oboe sooo damned touchy..like a sports car. Frustrated, I went to play test some Yamaha pros and the intonation was like a dream. They were so forgiving of breath that I melted..however the sound was bland to me. I am a German schooled player and our sound is brighter (ie. Heinz Holliger). Nothing wrong with either school just saying what I am used to.
I know there are more forgiving intonations out there.
My questions for you all:
My concern for the Rigoutat is that it may wear out and 3k is all the money I have, so should I buy it? Also, the crack has been taken care of, is it still something to be worried about? It plays fine.
Concerning the Patricola I have yet to get it (it's being UPS'd as we speak) and I have seen pictures of it but I can't find any specs for it on the internet. I guess I should email the company about it but I thought maybe you guys would know a site that would have the info. What they heck does S5 stand for? I know it is from 2002.
