Tabuteau used to use the concept of putting a candle five feet away from you and having the student blow it out. If you can talk to flute players, this might help as well.
If you search for the "Egg concept" on this forum, then you might find the concept of floating an egg in the back of your throat. Another idea would be to think of your nasal sound when you say "EEEEEH" (opposed to "OOOOOH"). Somehow, if you think of in vowels, it places your air in a different place.
Finally, if you try flaring your nostril or wrinkling up your nose while blowing out, this should also focus your air upward.
