Breathing and "appaggio"

Hi All,
I'd like to have more information about breathing and "appaggio" when
playing the oboe. My teacher has told me that breathing into the oboe is similar to that of singing, and she mentioned that opera singers use the
sinus cavity and the nose when they sing. Opera singers call this area the "mask". I looked up this technique of singing while online, and found that "the sound is sustained in the "mask" by the effect of a balanced air column."

Can anyone of you help me to understand this technique for the oboe? I'm having difficulty comprehending how to follow through with it.

My teacher also said that I blow into the oboe too hard and that I need to focus on the narrow passageway into the reed. I'm not sure I understand the focus part of it.
