 Re: removing/replacing octave inserts

You need a special forked tool to take out the 8ve inserts - an adjustable one is best as it can be used on all makes (Pisoni or Rigotti ones are reasonably inexpensive),

They are threaded, but be careful not to over tighten them when you put them back in or you will strip the thread and then you'll need to replace both the insert and the well into which the insert is screwed into.

You shouldn't have to replace the pads if replacing the inserts with the same kind or the same ones you took out, but if fitting new ones which aren't of the oboe maker's spec you may need to change the pad as the seating area may be a different diameter.

When you do put them back in, seal them with beeswax or cork grease (melted or spread on the undersides of the inserts) so they don't leak, and check the hole is clear - the hole is probably around 0.7mm to 0.75mm, though check to see if it's clear by using a piece of brass wire or a needle spring smaller than the hole so it'll push out anything blocking it.

If you have put them back in with beeswax, make sure the wax is still molten when they're screwed in - but to be sure, get a steel scriber or thick darning needle, heat it up red hot and stick the hot end into the hole and this will heat up the insert melting the wax, then take out the heated needle and let the insert and the wax cool down before putting the key back on.
