You are never too old to begin learning the oboe; being a "retiree" shouldn't be an issue. I'm 51, I started last year when I was 50. Go for it. :D
One more voice here saying "buy a cheapie $100-$500 oboe if you can't rent", see if you even like playing the oboe before you invest $1900 in a Fox. (I agree that $1900 seems high for a used Fox 330.) EBay has tons of cheapie used oboes, plastic and wood, all different makers.
Don't worry about potential resale value in your used cheapie, because oboes basically don't have much of a resale value anyway, unless you're dealing with the really high-end professional instruments like Loree and Margaux. It's like with cars: the minute you drive it off the lot, its value plummets, and no matter how carefully you maintain it, it's still always going to be "used", and you will never be able to recoup your investment. So don't worry about it too much.
My understanding of Barrington oboes is that they have placed themselves in the "hey, for only $700 you can get full conservatory!" market niche, which sounds like kind of a shallow market niche to me: is that all it does, is provide full conservatory for this low, low price? Uh huh.
Selmer beginner oboes are decent, but you wanna watch out for the ones that don't have a low B-flat key, because it's a major pain in the butt not to be able to play low B-flat. You can tell by looking at the bell: if there's a hole there but no key to cover it, you wanna skip that one.
