They actually sell the silk or cotton swab sets with two sizes of swab... obviously the small one for the top joint and the big one for the bottom joint. I have a rather old model of oboe, when they made the top opening smaller so I found out that I had to file down the little lead weight a bit and then I have to run the swab through just enough that I can still pull it back out the large end to clear out most of the moisture blocking passage before I pull the swab all the way through.
From everything I've ever heard, turkey feathers are largely ineffective, but if it works for you, fine. Personally, I clean my key pads with a dollar bill, like my instructor says to. The paper of the dollar is more absorbant than any other paper you can use because of the fibers in it, and it's really easy to slide the dollar in under the pad and press the moisture out. This especially helps if your oboe has cracked and water tends to collect under the key pads of the upper joint.
