My routine:
Small, thin cotton, not silk swab, for the top joint. My teacher claims that cotten gets stuck less than silk, but I used silk for years before that without trouble. Then after the swab run through two or three times (pulling it up towards, but not through, the reed receiver), a sweep with the feather. I find that helps get the water out of the key seating where the swab can't necessarily reach. Middle joint: Three run-throughs with the cotton swap then again with a feather. Bottom joint: Just the feather. There's usually not much in there anyway.
