Covey or Weber bore adjustments anyone?
Author: cjwright

I just purchased a new Royale and had it sent off to Mr. Weber to do his bore adjustment. Daniel Stolper told me one time that he had tried an oboe Mr. Weber had worked on and said it was different. I was wondering if anyone else on this Bboard has had experience with this work?

I would also be interested to hear if anyone has had Mr. Covey adjust their bore (original covey oboe owners don't count. Just other brands that have had bore adjustments.)

OK -- I won't tell you that I had my bore adjusted at Covey, then (since it is a Covey to start with).

However, I don't know if Paul Covey is actually doing the work himself anymore. It was Brian Seaton, who is doing that sort of thing at Covey now, who did mine. If that matters. ;)

I have a question about bore adjustments (for anyone who's had it done). Are you trying to fix something specific? If so, what was it?
Thanks,
-Woody

Woody --

Even I don't know why there was a bore adjustment done on my newish (2001?) Covey. I had been having a lot of water problems, and sent it down to Atlanta for them to look at. I was simply told, "I did some bore work," and I guess I was supposed to know what that meant.

I have heard that excessive wetness can cause bore distortions, so maybe that's what it was about -- putting it back to pristine?

The oboe cracked two weeks later, btw, from the trills down to (but not including) the little "C" tone hole. Cause and effect? I have no way of knowing.

All this was two years ago. The oboe has been repaired, and is playing remarkably well, but I don't know what role the bore adjustment had, if any, in all this. Does anybody?

I have heard from a couple of people that a bore adjustment makes the oboe "new" again. Meaning that you would have to take the utmost care with it and break it in again, just like it was new.
If this is true, I have no clue. But it sounds plausible.

About 6 months ago, there was extensive discussion in the IDRS list about problems with high note intonation and response problems on the newer Lorée Royal AK instruments, which needed a bore adjustment to play right. This may be what Covey and Weber are doing.

P.S., the model is the Royal, not the Royale.

P.P.S., James Caldwell told me about a year ago that the Royal is great for orchestral work, and that the regular model, and his own model, are better for ensemble work.

FYI,
I just got my oboe back from Weber. Everything feels great. The notes feel more "locked in", with an even scale and nice high register. There's plenty of "ring" in the sound and I consider it a well-spent $250.

The adjustment is not to make the oboe "like new", meaning if you have a blown out instrument, it's not going to add wood back, but it will do some serious improvements. Check out his website for more information.

Ken, I've heard of the James Caldwell oboe, but what is it? What are the modifications? How is it better or worse? Is it a Loree or Laubin model?

PS. CAldwell's new CD sounds great. His Le Tombeau is so nice. Seems like the closest of anyone to DeLancie's sound.
