I've played a kingwood Howarth S5 oboe since 1999, and it's never split in all the time I've had it - even though the top joint was transplanted for a new one before I bought it, I've never had any trouble. I would have been just as happy with the original top joint if it had been pinned, but I'm not complaining - it's a fantastic oboe and one that'll last me for aeons.
The only oboe I split was a Yamaha 821TP - and that was a grenadilla one.
